SPONTANEOUS CREATION AND INSPIRATION

This talk goes deep into my process. I discuss color, inspiration and the various approaches I engage when doing this type of work. I'll share a variety of student work as well as a few other artists and discuss what I feel makes a piece successful. This is a fun talk full of eye candy!

Glorious Color and Inspiration

“Man needs color to live; it's just as necessary an element as fire and water.” -Fernand Léger

The secret language of color is one that I find so fascinating and exciting because color illuminates everything in the Universe. Color has the power to shift moods; it can excite, relax and protect. As an artist, there are times when I want to create something stimulating, and other times, calm.

In this lecture, I will discuss the significance of color, both in our lives and in the natural world, as well as our art. I’ll touch on a bit of science, color relationships and explore our personal preferences. Work from artists using different mediums will be shared to further illustrate the power of color.

It’s the “Quilting” that Binds Us…

My travels have brought me to many wonderful places, and I have found that the love we share for our art form is universal.

Join me on a virtual tour as I share my adventures and work from Quilters I’ve met over the years. Are there similarities? What about cultural influences? Together we’ll take a deep dive into the wonderful world of Quilts and people that make them!

Appliqué + Piecing = New Possibilities

In this workshop, students will compose a small design, create a full-scale pattern on freezer paper, and assemble the forms using a technique called Appli-piecing, originally developed by Caryl Bryer Fallert-Gentry.

By using this technique, you can bring almost any complex abstract idea into quilt form. You will retain a clean, graphic look and when complete, you will have a quilt top pieced together with a 1/4” seam allowance.

Improv Blocks

Students will create improv blocks to be used in a small or large piece. The blocks may vary in size and shape and can be very complex or quite simple. This is a great class for becoming comfortable with the process of creating without an initial plan, while at the same time, retaining a little structure. Sheila will demonstrate construction techniques for sewing curved seams and discuss some of the challenges you may run into with spontaneous design and piecing.

*Available for 3 or 6 hours

Lines and Curves

Students will combine thick and thin lines with curved pieces and assemble the quilt top in rows. There are infinite possibilities. Sheila will demonstrate construction techniques for sewing curved seams and discuss some of the challenges you may run into with spontaneous design and piecing.

Thank you again for the wonderful presentation yesterday! Your talk was very inspirational. You have lived a life full of travel and teaching. Everyone loved your work! We hope to see you in a virtual workshop in the future.

During the early part of the pandemic, I participated in a one day zoom workshop given by Sheila. The technique was challenging, but accessible to me as an intermediate quilter. The workshop was a lot of fun and Sheila was delightful to learn from!
